Chia (Salvia hispanica)
A member of the mint family, native to central and south America and grows up to 1.75metres tall.
Its flowers are purple or white and are produced in numerous clusters in a spike at the end of each stem.
Chia is grown commercially for its seed, one of the richest natural sources of the omega-3 fatty acid, Alpha Linolenic Acid (ALA).
Typically, the seeds are small ovals with a diameter around 1 mm, yield 25–30% extractable oil, high in dietary fibre and protein, making it nutrient rich and popular in the health food sector.
